Embedded energy is an assessment of the energy used in a finished product. Its calculation involves isolating the energy consumed in the stages of harvesting, processing, manufacturing, and transportation. Every product from a pen to a chair to a house is a complex combination of many processed materials, all of which have quantifiable energy histories. If made visible and accessible, this information can empower and motivate designers of all disciplines to make informed and responsible decisions in their day-to-day material selections.
